Let’s Get Active!

We recently read a very worrying statistic, that one in three children age 2 to 15 living in the UK are overweight or obese. Our children need to put down their mobile phones and tablets, turn off their games consoles and get active. The positives of being active significantly outweigh the health issues which could come in later life from being overweight! And that’s where we come in...

A stay at XUK will ensure your child is active from the moment they arrive. Every Sunday we welcome our campers with lots of fun and games on our fields. We have different sports and games to choose from as well as calmer activities such as making friendship bracelets or having a sing along with one of our talented ukulele playing staff members. After a whole camp Welcome Meeting, it’s time to start getting to know one another through icebreakers and initiative games.

Throughout the week, our campers take part in lots of activities. Some are more adrenalin pumping than others, but ‘it’s all go’! We have lots of different sports on offer at all our camps from traditional sports such as Rugby and Lacrosse to more contemporary games like Football Golf and GaGa. And for those of our campers who want to take their fitness to the next level, we often offer Fitness as a choice session at all our camps. The UK chief medical offers recommend that all children should participate in at least sixty minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day. We can proudly say, we tick that box!

Camps are a wonderful place to try new activities and you never know, you might discover a new passion or find something you are talented in. It’s not every day you get to try Fencing or get to take over a swimming pool and have a game of Water Polo with your friends. And if you find something you really like, why not take it up as a hobby when you return home?

Although we do not ban mobile phones and other electronic devices, we encourage our campers to limit their usage and do have a rule of strictly no mobile phone usage during activities. We see this as ‘disconnecting to reconnect’. By putting your phone down, not only are you giving your thumbs a well-deserved rest, but you are also much more likely to step outside of your Dormitory and do something active with your friends. We have brilliant facilities at all our camps so there is nothing from stopping you from having a game of Football or Volleyball outside during free time or having a few games of Table Tennis in our cosy Common Rooms.

You’ll always be on the move around our camps too. Our stunning venues are all surrounded by lots of green space and facilities are spread across them. Whilst walking from your Dormitories or our Common Rooms to our Dining Halls, or to activities, you’ll be adding to your step count all day! It’s recommended that you should walk 10,000 steps a day – this is SO easy to achieve each day at camp. Don’t forget on our trip days too, you’ll be walking around some of the UK’s most famous cities and towns, again adding to those steps, being on the go without even realising it!
