Developing Leadership Skills Through Summer Camp Activities

Why leadership matters for young people

Leadership is more than taking charge – it is listening, collaborating and inspiring others to succeed. At XUK Camps, we weave leadership into daily life through carefully planned summer camp leadership activities that build confidence, teamwork and resilience in a fun, supportive setting.

Families choose XUK for high-quality residential summer camps for kids and summer camps for teens because we combine safety and warmth with purposeful challenges that bring out the best in every child.

Our summer camp leadership activities programme for older campers focuses on leadership for teens. Participants practise decision-making, communication and teamwork as they plan activities, mentor younger campers and take responsibility within their groups. For those seeking more structured development, we also incorporate elements often searched for as summer leadership programs for teens, with clear goals, feedback and reflection. Parents frequently tell us their teens return home more confident, motivated and ready to take initiative at school, on the sports field and at home.

If your young person is 16 or 17, our Leader in Training (LIT) programme offers a guided pathway into leadership. Under close staff supervision, LIT participants help to organise sessions. They support younger groups and contribute ideas to evening events – gaining real-world experience of responsibility, teamwork and service. Learn more on our Residential Camp age Groups page, where LIT is available specifically for 16–17s, and explore how camp nurtures independence in our blog on life skills. Many families find that LIT also complements future goals such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, with experiences that translate into valuable skills and reflections.

Building confidence through activities

From team sports and outdoor adventures to drama and creative projects, our activities & trips are designed to challenge and inspire. Younger campers in our UK summer camps for 12 year olds discover their strengths through cooperative games and problem-solving, while teens refine leadership by facilitating tasks, encouraging peers and celebrating collective success.
